Virtual Reality Development

Dorset Creative develop Virtual Reality software platforms for training, simulation, gaming, or as a medium to engage users in immersive content. We work with our clients to create a concept, produce the 3D assets, and then program the scene in Unity or Unreal ready for deployment.

We develop for HTC Vive, Oculus Go, Quest, Quest 2, Rift, Rift S, Google Cardboard and Microsoft Hololens. If you are looking for a different to delivery 3D content, check out our custom hardware page.

Virtual Reality Development

What is Virtual Reality?

Virtual Reality is an artificial environment, developed through 3D and 360-degree imagery, which allows the user to be fully immersed in the surroundings, combined with virtual and sound effects. These near real-life experiences evoke real emotion and presence, causing personal and memorable involvement for all users. Using a virtual reality headset allows the user to turn and look around as if in the physical world, along with controllers that enables users to interact with the experience.

Virtual reality is used in many different areas such as healthcare, training, construction, gaming, entertainment, and data visualization. Due to its immersive nature, a user quickly engages with the content they are part of without any distractions. For this reason, industries such as healthcare and military use virtual reality for training.

How can Dorset Creative help with your virtual reality development?

For over 7 years, Dorset Creative have been creating 3D assets and developing training and simulation software for immersive environments where the Virtual Reality output of the project has been for large format screens, 360-degree projection rooms, HTC Vive, Oculus Go, Quest, Quest 2, Rift, Rift S, Google Cardboard and Microsoft Hololens.

We have streamlined our Virtual Reality Development process so we can quickly and effectively design and develop the user journey and user interface, create the 3D models, and build the software ready for deployment.

In addition to our immersive team, our Microsoft Certified software developers can work on the core of the product to integrate a content management system, user tracking, or usage analytics to turn your idea into an enterprise software platform.

Virtual Reality Development Process

Project Research

At the start of all VR projects, we run a workshop to explore the full extent of the software. We can then plan the design, 3D modelling, build and deployment of the Virtual Reality software.

Design

Once the research has taken place, our graphic designers and 3D user experience team work on the user journey and user interface that will be implemented in the build phase of the project.

3D Model

The 3D modelling phase is where we create, buy or modify 3D assets needed for the project. This could be creating a detailed car from scratch, modifying a CAD drawing to work in VR or purchasing assets.

Build

Once we have the user experience planned, user interface designed and 3D models created, we can build the virtual reality software and add tailored audio to deliver the immersive experience.

3D Modelling

3D modelling is the process of creating a mathematical representation of a three-dimensional object. Our 3D artists create 3D assets by working with your pictures, video, sketches, concepts or technical drawings. Then we use specialised 3D modelling software to create incredibly realistic models that can be viewed as 2D images or explored as fully 3D simulations in Virtual Reality.

Case Studies

Virtual Reality Air Traffic Control

In this project, we developed a portable solution that would allow our client to demonstrate the size and scale of their training simulators anywhere in the world. As well as creating a Virtual Reality “sales floor”, we also developed a waiting room that could be filled with client testimonials, sales collateral and overview videos. This software had two modes, one that would allow a user to explore the scene on their own, or an “instructor” mode that allows a sales person to control where the user was and what they were seeing in the scene.

Oil Drilling Simulation in Unity

Dorset Creative have been creating and programming assets for oil drilling training and simulation for the past 5 years and the majority of developments include creating a suite of 3D assets and then developing a user interface that allows a user to train how to drill oil wells on various oil rigs.

Pollinate Virtual Reality Game

Dorset Creative’s virtual reality game Pollinate! immerses children into a 3D world that will introduce environmental sustainability issues by exploring these concepts of ‘cause and effect’ in an ecosystem and the interconnectedness of species. By responsibly watering their plants, children will need to help the honeybees to pollinate flowers, causing fruits to grow. Too much or too little watering will cause consequences for human civilisation and in the natural forest. A ‘fruit boost’ pesticide will speed up progress, but quickly, the children will see the effect that too much interference with nature has on an ecosystem. The aim of this educational game is to keep everybody in the ecosystem happily balanced, otherwise – like in reality – the environment becomes unsustainable for the future.
